Harbin is unique not only for its distinctive ice and snow culture but also for its strong "foreign" influences. Russian-style bread, smoked sausages, and kvass all highlight the city's Russian flavor. Before 1949, Harbin had around 40 Orthodox churches. With the passage of time, few remain, and Saint Sophia Cathedral is one of the most famous survivors.
The name "Sophia" means "wisdom of God". Construction of the cathedral began in March 1907 during the reign of Emperor Guangxu. It was originally built as a wooden garrison church for the Russian Fourth Infantry Division in Siberia. It has since been damaged, restored, and rebuilt multiple times.
Today, Saint Sophia Cathedral stands as a landmark and a major tourist attraction in Harbin. Visitors flock to admire its grandeur, while the square outside has become a popular spot for photoshoots, attracting hundreds of new studios. Tourists can dress in palace-style costumes, golden wigs, or even pose with magic wands, creating photos that look as if they were taken abroad.
