Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival, is one of the traditional and important festivals in China. It falls on the 15th day of the lunar calendar and marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. On this day, people participate in various celebratory activities such as enjoying lantern displays, solving riddles, and eating yuanxiao, a type of sweet dumpling. Lantern Festival is a joyous and heartwarming festival that allows us to understand its origin and traditions.
Lantern Festival has several legends associated with its origin, and here are two of the most well-known stories:
According to legend, during the reign of Emperor Hanming, there was a beautiful and talented palace maid named Huayue. She was skilled in embroidery and had a kind heart. Huayue had many admirers in the palace, including Emperor Hanming and Emperor Hanwu.
It is said that Emperor Hanming invited Huayue to a banquet on Lantern Festival to enjoy the city's lantern displays. However, the emperor broke his promise and invited other palace maids instead. This deeply saddened Huayue, and she sought the help of a wise woman. Together, they used Huayue's intelligence and cleverness to write the phrase "Xia Wei Jian Yue" (Reflecting the Moon in the Curtain) on the walls of Xuyang City. When Emperor Hanming saw this, he deeply regretted his actions and eventually married Huayue. Since then, the lanterns displayed during Lantern Festival are referred to as "Xia Wei Jian Yue."
During the Tang Dynasty, it is said that a lantern riddle contest was held in the willow groves of Chang'an City on the night of Lantern Festival. This contest attracted many people who came to watch and participate. One of the most famous lantern riddle creators was Tao Gu, who hid riddles in the lanterns and offered them to the public for guessing. Tao Gu was a talented poet and writer, and his lantern riddles were highly admired and sought after by many.
The tradition of willow lantern riddles spread across China, and to this day, people engage in lantern riddle guessing on the night of Lantern Festival. It has become a tradition to inspire interaction and connection through the fun and challenge of solving riddles.
