The Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that marks the end of the Chinese New Year. It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, which typically lands in February or March. On this day, people in China will enjoy various activities, such as appreciating lanterns, eating sweet glutinous rice balls, and watching lion and dragon dances.

The Lantern Festival has a long history that can be traced back to the Han Dynasty. At that time, the imperial court held a banquet called "Shangyuan Festival" on the 15th day of the first lunar month. The court officials would dress up in fancy clothes and appreciate flowers under the moonlight. Later, this tradition spread to the public and became known as the Lantern Festival.

There are several explanations for the origin of the name "Yuanxiao", which refers to the sweet glutinous rice balls that people eat on this day. One explanation is that the round shape of the rice balls represents reunion and harmony.

The most prominent activity of the Lantern Festival is appreciating lanterns. People will light up various types of lanterns, which come in different shapes and sizes, such as animal-shaped, human-shaped, and flower-shaped lanterns.

Eating yuanxiao is another traditional activity of the Lantern Festival. Yuanxiao is made of glutinous rice flour and filled with sweet or savory stuffing. Eating yuanxiao symbolizes reunion and harmony.

Lion and dragon dances are also traditional performances during the Lantern Festival. The tradition can be traced back to the Han Dynasty, when a man named Lu Jian made a dragon-shaped lantern and had people dress up as dragons to perform. This performance is later called "dragon dance."
