The Lantern Festival is one of the traditional Chinese festivals, also known as "Shangyuan Festival", "Lantern Festival", "Fifteenth of the First Moon", etc.It originates from the Han Dynasty and has a history of more than 2,000 years. In addition, the Lantern Festival is also celebrated in many East Asian countries and regions, such as Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, etc.
The main customs of the Lantern Festival are appreciating lanterns, guessing lantern riddles, and eating glutinous rice balls. There are several origins of the Lantern Festival.
It is said that the Lantern Festival originated from a small town called "Lingnan" in southern China, now Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. In the late Ming Dynasty, southern China was heavily invaded by Japanese pirates, and people's lives and property were threatened. At that time, a hero named Huang Sanzi led the villagers to resist the Japanese invasion. On the occasion of this festival, the villagers hung several lanterns on the edge of the pond at the entrance of the village to celebrate. Since then, this way of celebration has spread from Lingnan to all parts of the country.
Taoists believe that the fifteenth day of the first lunar month is the day when the heavenly immortals come down to the world, and it is also a good day for people to turn disasters into blessings. Therefore, they advocate rehearsing moral music and dance on this day to pray for good luck and good fortune, which is the origin of the Lantern Festival.
There is another saying that the origin of the Lantern Festival is to commemorate Emperor Wu of Han who restored New Year's Day to celebrate the beginning of a new year. It is said that in the Han Wu Emperor's era, the Lantern Festival was to commemorate the old Purple Forbidden City Lantern Festival. To celebrate this day, members of the royal family would light many lanterns, making the entire city's night sky bright.
