There are many different legends and stories about the history of the Lantern Festival. However, the most convincing and widely accepted explanation is that the festival originated in the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). In ancient times, Emperor Wu of Han believed that the fifteenth day of the first lunar month was an important day and was suitable for setting off fireworks and guessing riddles. Later on, this way of celebration spread widely among the people and became the present Lantern Festival.
